MARC 751 Added Entry - Geographic Name

MARC field 751 in the Bibliographic format contains an added entry in which the entry element is a geographic name related to a particular attribute of the described item.

MARC 751 is closely aligned with MARC 752 Added Entry - Hierarchical Place Name. The primary difference is that the 751 place name is in direct order, while the 752 place name is hierarchical:

MARC 752 was first defined (1975) for identifying the geographic audience of newspapers, and subsequently for publication/production of rare materials. Field 751 is more recent (2019) and is intended for wider general designation of geographical associations with the item described. Folger catalogers apply both when appropriate to the description. Policy and formulation

  • Apply to records for vault materials
  • Use when there is an event associated with a resource (excluding publication). Specifically,
    • sermons, addresses, auctions, etc.
    • descriptions/depictions of battles
    • place of performance, if appearing prominently
  • Do not use for place names associated with almanacs.
  • Use authorized form of geographic name, in direct order.
  • Use for all event places, regardless of redundancy with 752 or other fields.
  • Add a relationship designator.
  • Add ǂ2 naf or ǂ2 lcsh as appropriate
